To create three efficient, modular strollers that balance universal appeal with local adaptability that attracts parents in different regions. Additionally, MODYN needed to infuse the design with classic Maxi-Cosi lines that would make the Lila strollers instantly recognizable.
MODYN wasn’t just brought on as the design lead but as a strategic partner for the Lila line. With a deep knowledge of stroller design and the heritage of the Maxi-Cosi brand, Dorel Juvenile trusted us with supporting them from inception through production. At the same time, they wanted us to leverage this understanding to advance innovation and push the brand further — leading to features like duo-functionality, one-hand folding and the iconic ShapeOfYou memory foam inlay.
We always start by mapping user needs and target groups. But this project was unique because Maxi Cosi wanted to bring a global family of strollers to the market at the same time. Because of this, our team dedicated a lot of time to identifying regional preferences and country-specific use cases that we needed to design for — from big wheels to bassinets.
We quickly realized we wanted to make the family of Lila strollers modular. This modularity would give modern parents the flexibility they needed — to go from mono to duo, for example — while allowing Maxi Cosi to produce parts more seamlessly and reach the market quicker.
Our design phase was fast-paced and multifaceted, including both sketching and modeling. But, it started with the one-hand slide fold we knew we wanted to integrate across this entire modular system. From there, we were able to solidify the lines of the frame and begin integrating individual characteristics and features for each region.
Early on we were fleshing out our designs using foam models, rapid prototypes and full 3D-CAD. These three-dimensional prototypes allowed us to start critically assessing aspects like safety compliances and integrating our usability know-how. We also stayed on as advisors to the Maxi-Cosi engineering team through production, providing advice on how to stay true to the character lines and maintain the right look and feel through production.
